Update: if you have Clippy installed on a Jailbroken iPhone, Skype will crash when entering user name. Thanks to gadgetboy on Twitter.
Earlier in the day, Ben had some complaining to do about the newly-released Skype app on the iPhone. I myself joined some Twitterers in voicing concerns about the app and the call quality produced by it.
But I have some great news: we found the culprit to many of these problems and have traced the issue back to jailbroken phones! So we decided to put out an audio recording about how to fix the issue. iPhone still a virgin (not jailbroken)? There are some tips for you in here as well, so grab a quick listen!

When Scott Forstall announced the Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) for the iPhone at WWDC 2008, it was regarded as a very creative method to get around the battery-drain of background processes. While the APNS does not solve all background process problems (try using the APNS to stream Pandora while browsing the web!), it certainly is an interesting solution. As time went on and the APNS wasn’t to be seen, I wondered what’s taken Apple so long to release it and whether Apple just forgot about it outright. The anticipation ended only a few weeks ago when we learned the reason as to why the service was noticeably absent: Apple needed to restructure the entire service to make it more scalable. This was taken as a big “oh, I see now” by the industry. But underneath it all, delaying the APNS was a decision that came as a result of previous experience Apple has had, namely, with MobileMe. Update 3: gadgetboy over on Twitter writes: “Skype for iPhone continually crashes whenever I attempt to enter my username. Anyone else experiencing this?”
Update 2: Sebastien Barrau over on Twitter reports that the Skype app on his jailbroken iPhone crashes when someone picks up on the other side as well as when sending/receiving Skype messages.
Update: Alex reports that the Skype app on his iPhone is completely useless – the parties on the other end can’t even make out what he’s saying, as his audio comes in extremely gargled and muffled. This happens on all Skype-Skype calls as well as during all Skype-out calls. He is running a virgin (non jailbroken) iPhone 3G 8GB with a Comcast cable connection, low latency to the router as well as to the server, and using the included iPhone headset.
After eagerly awaiting the release of Skype for the iPhone late last night and having “futuristic” discussions about it on the TNR podcast, I was ecstatically happy to have downloaded it. The first person I called was our awesome fellow blogger and podcast co-host, Alex Luft. And that’s where the disappointment came: the Skype-Skype call sounded as if we were talking through pipes. I then tested it with my land-line, at which point the pipe sound disappeared. Then came the next issue: the Skype app quit after 45 seconds of use.
Rebooting the iPhone didn’t help. Perhaps the fact that my iPhone is jailbroken might be the reason as to why the app quit. Turning off all my jailbreaking “tweaks” didn’t result in any more luck.
Later tonight I’m going to restore the iPhone to factory conditions and see if that makes any difference and will report on the results.
Thus far, Skype for the iPhone has been a major let down for me. That’s not to say I’m not hoping for it: I depend on Skype to record the TechNest Report Podcast every day, and the Skype app on the iPhone was my hope to crank out better sound quality than through TruPhone on the iPhone (since it’s a Skype-sanctioned effort). I’m pulling for you, iPhone and Skype, I’m pullin’.

In the middle of last year, I pondered the whereabouts of Microsoft’s Exchange for the rest of us. Recently, I received a trackback from Paul Smith’s blog, wherein he quotes excepts of that post and writes that “Microsoft already offer push support for Hotmail, and custom domains that use Hotmail as their backend, and they offer this for free, and have done for a year or two.”
This is my reply to Paul:
Hey there Paul,
I somehow missed your reply to my post until now, so I apologize for the delayed response – linking to your post in the comments section of TechNest Report would have helped. Thanks for quoting me, by the way: I feel famous and important already
Now for the topic at hand: you state that “Microsoft already offers push support for Hotmail.” That’s great! But I have to ask: if a tree fell in a forest and nobody heard it, did it ever fall? Read more »
